  • Bio

I have been involved with music most of my life, since learning the cornet at age 7, and have played in brass bands ever since. I studied at Salford University from 1992-1999, gaining a degree in Band Musicianship and an MA in composition with distinction. I was working as a brass peripatetic teacher in Chorley until February 2006, and conducting Chorley Silver Band (a youth band). This is I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. I was in remission but relapsed in July of that year, got in remission again by September and had a bone marrow transplant in November. This was successful until my latest relapse in June, by which time I was told I couldn't have any more chemo or radiotherapies, and was given less than a year to live. However, I am still living (mid-july) and I have now obtained a tablet which may control the leukaemia for a while at least. I hope so. It gives me more time to get my music out and played, which is my main purpose in life apart from pure survival. That is the purpose of this myspace, to enable people to hear my music, and remember me through it. It will outlive me.

where do I start? any music is an influence. I love most original brass band works, having played quite a lot of them. Eric Ball, Gilbert Vinter, Philip Sparke, Edward Gregson, Peter Graham. I could go on. As for orchestral, Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Wagner. Aside from that, my greatest influence was David King. My time at Salford University and at the ybs band was absolutely fantastic. I was to rejoin them in 2006 but the leukaemia put paid to that. I must have had it when I did the festival of brass in Feb 2006. Four days after, I was in hospital.
