A Review..:.... ....Four Japanese guys will have their revenge on Seattle..... Born and raised in Japan, post-grunge influenced singer and songwriter Koji Tamura met guitarist Katsumi Yokota in 2003. The two bonded together over their similar taste in music, and started working together on their songs. Soon after this fated pairing the two went on to play acoustic gigs at small bars and live houses in Tokyo under the name 'Dogs'. The persona fit perfectly, being taken from several famous songs of their favorite Grunge bands including Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots. (You know which songs we're talking about.).. As stated, Dogs' songs are heavily influenced by the Grunge and Alternative bands from the 90's era in America, with some hits of Hard Rock and other genres too. At the time it seemed to Dogs this type of style was so out of fashion with the music scene as a whole in Japan. Their songs are written by Koji - who spent his youth working in the US military base in Japan, had lived in Los Angeles for 3 months, and also dated a girl from Canada at the time - and are entirely with English lyrics, which made it difficult for them to obtain other band members in Japan. Therefore, Dogs had to endure nearly two years before finally finding a suitable drummer and bass guitarist. ..Growing to be a four member band for the first time, Dogs started playing gigs in slightly bigger live houses and bars in and around the Tokyo area. Among the indie field they quickly became well-known for their energetic, charismatic, and genuine live performances. .. Soon after a few growing pains of some member changes, they settled with drummer Atsunori Ito and bassist Tetsuya Kayanuma. At this point they changed the band name from Dogs to D.O.G.S., containing the same pronunciation and meaning, and then went into the recording studio in the summer of 2006. During this session, with recording engineer Leon McCormick, they laid down thirteen tracks and self-released their first album, "Out Of the Prison". .. So come see it for yourself - you will find their struggle, pain, loneliness, anger and hope in these songs. Which may not be new themes in this world, but you will see that they are not copies or rip-offs of anyone. It's real – encompassing a heart, soul, will, and voice - that you can't ignore. .. D.O.G.S. History
Four Japanese guys will have their revenge on Seattle ...
D.O.G.S. -- A History:
After making their first album "Out Of The Prison" in January 2007, D.O.G.S. had to go through another member-change due to the departure of then-drummer Atsunori Ito. The band ran through audition for their new drummer, but couldn't find the right one until summer of that year. During this period, the bassist Tetsuya Kayanuma also left the band to go back to his former band and it led the band to the temporary hiatus.
In the summer of 2007, D.O.G.S. began moving again with new drummer Yuichi Sato (of the hardcore band Within The Last Wish) and new bassist Hirohide Takanohashi, who replied the ad. Once again they began playing in underground venues in Tokyo, gained some reputation. The band entered the studio in January 2008 to record the follow-up to their previous album "Out Of The Prison". But soon after the recording session started, Hirohide decided to leave the band to pursue his other interest. The session ended in two weeks after recording only two songs, (this EP's first two tracks) and the band had to go through another hiatus. Yuichi went back full-time with his main hardcore band, and Koji went on to join his friend's new heavy rock band "Quiet Oval" as a vocalist.
Quiet Oval soon disbanded, and Koji once again sought for new drummer/bassist for D.O.G.S.. In the end of 2008 D.O.G.S. returned to the stage with temporary supporting drummer and bassist and original guitarist Katsumi Yokota. While still auditioning for the permanent drummer/bassist, the band kept playing gigs as well as working on new songs for the new album.
The recording session re-started in April 2009 with then-supporting bassist Jun Nishio and drummer Tomohiro Kawashima, they managed to finish recording another 2 songs (Go Down & Separate). Koji also recorded bunch of new songs at the same time with only acoustic guitar. (also included in this EP) before moving on to further recording, the band decided to take a break from recording session due to difficulties with supporting members.
D.O.G.S. began searching for new and permanent drummer and bassist since then, while completing mixing those songs they've already recorded for the new album. The result is this EP, named "Over The Walls", holds the years of the band's struggle, bitter sweet emotions and pain, and a hope.
After completing this EP the band headed to Malaysia in March 2010 with new supporting members (including their first and original member Rewhey on bass) to do their first-ever shows outside of the country. The shows were successful and it helped gained some fans in Malaysia. The band is now (and still) working on the new full-album and in search for the permanent members.
