This Week in Casting, 5.4.12
Welcome back to another edition of “This Week in Casting,” the column that gives you the rundown of who’s attached to the hottest upcoming projects in Hollywood. From big time players to fresh-faced rookies, we’ve got the week in review for you right here. This week, we’ve got casting news about Tom Cruise, Robert Pattinson, John Legend, Emma Watson, and many more. Get all the details below!
Tom Cruise will star in and produce a reboot of Van Helsing
The movie: Famed vampire hunter Van Helsing hunts Dracula in this reboot of Hugh Jackman’s 2004 film.
Other projects: Cruise will soon sing his way onto the big screen in the 80s hair metal musical Rock of Ages.
Robert Pattinson as one of the leads in The Rover
The movie: Guy Pearce plays a man who chases down a gang who stole his car in the Australian outback in the near future. Pattinson will play the brother of one of the thieves who gets caught up with the cops.
Other projects: He’s starring in David Cronenberg’s crazy-looking film Cosmopolis, coming out later this year.
Elijah Wood starring in Grand Piano
The movie: In one of my favorite stories to come out of Hollywood in a long time, Grand Piano will star Wood as a former piano prodigy who returns from a five year absence to perform in front of a crowd again, only to find a note written on his sheet music demanding that he play the best concert of his life or he and his wife will die. (Amazing, right?!)
Other projects: He’s still starring in that show “Wilfred” on FX, and, of course, he’ll be returning to Middle Earth as Frodo in The Hobbit this Christmas.
Julianne Moore as Carrie’s mom in remake of Carrie
The movie: Moore will play the religious fanatic mother of Carrie (Chloe Moretz), a girl whose telekinetic powers come on full display when she hits puberty.
Other projects: She stars opposite Jeff Bridges in the upcoming period piece adventure film The Seventh Son.
John Legend as a host on ABC’s Duets
The movie: Legend is taking over for Lionel Ritchie on ABC’s new reality show, which will feature Legend, Robin Thicke, Jennifer Nettles, and Kelly Clarkson scouring the country for undiscovered musical talent to be their duet partners.
Other projects: The nine-time Grammy winner has another potential show in the works over at Showtime, featuring different musical artists talking about their careers and performing a song in front of a live studio audience. Hopefully that will be coming out soon.
Emma Watson as herself in End of the World
The movie: Based on an YouTube sketch starring Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel, this feature length movie is about those two guys surviving the apocalypse while they hang out at James Franco’s house. Franco will play himself, as will a ton of other celebrities, including Watson, Jason Segel, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, and more.
Other projects: She’ll star in Sofia Coppola’s movie about the real-life teenage criminals that broke into celebrity homes and stole jewelry, called The Bling Ring.
Rooney Mara will star in Ain’t Them Bodies Saints
The movie: Said to be similar to Bonnie and Clyde, this film will co-star other young talent like Casey Affleck and Ben Foster.
Other projects: The former Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is working with Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven) on a new film called The Bitter Pill, which co-stars Channing Tatum, Jude Law, and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Vik Sahay starring in a werewolf movie called WER
The movie: He’ll play the leader of an team investigating the murder of an American family in Paris.
Where you might have seen him: NBC’s “Chuck,” and he also appeared briefly in American Reunion as Stifler’s boss.
Sharlto Copley starring in Open Grave
The movie: In this creepy thriller, Copley plays one of six people who wake up in a pit of rotting corpses, unsure of how they got there. He has flashbacks of murdering people and starts to wonder if he’s actually the killer.
Where you might have seen him: He first hit the screen in 2009’s science fiction film District 9, and he starred opposite Bradley Cooper and Liam Neeson in The A-Team.
Teri Hatcher will star in ABC Family’s show Jane By Design
The show: Hatcher will play Jane’s long lost mother in four episodes of the series, which stars Erica Dasher as a hip teenager who is mistaken for an adult and hired on to work at a chic fashion house.
Where you might have seen her: This is Hatcher’s first acting role since “Desperate Housewives,” and your mom might recongize her as Lois Lane from the 90s Superman show “The New Adventures of Lois and Clark.” I know mine does.
Michael Stahl-David as part of the ensemble cast in The Bounceback
The movie: This indie romantic comedy sees two former couples who end up in Austin, Texas on the same emotional weekend.
Where you might have seen him: He starred in Matt Reeves’ fantastic 2008 handheld monster thriller, Cloverfield.
