Adam Yauch, better known as MCA, has died as a result of a long battle with cancer. Yauch, who helped form the Beastie Boys, had previously announced that he was receiving treatment for a tumor in his salivary gland in 2009. While reports circulated in 2011 claimed he was free from the cancer, the optimism was unfortunately premature.

At the time, Yauch wrote on his website:
    .
“Hello My Friends While I’m grateful for all the positive energy people are sending my way, reports of my being totally cancer free are exaggerated. I’m continuing treatment, staying optimistic and hoping to be cancer free in the near future.”
    .
Fans knew something was wrong in March when MCA announced that he was unable to attend the Beastie Boys induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (They’ve been eligible since 2007). HBO will air the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony honoring the group this Saturday, May 5th. The group is only the third rap group in history to enter the Hall of Fame, after Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (in 2007) and Run-D.M.C. (in 2009).
    .
The Beastie Boys were originally founded as a hardcore punk band back in 1979 by Youch, Michael “Mike D” Diamond, and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz. Their first EP, “Pollywog Stew” was released in 1982. The band made the transition to hip hop in 1984 after some success with their experimental 12″ “Cooky Puss.” Their debut album, “License To Ill” was released in 1986 and propelled the band to commercial success. The group has released eight albums together, selling over 22 million albums in the United States and 40 million albums worldwide.

RIP MCA, as a teenager in high school, my friends and I would listen and sing their songs at parties, and I aways wanted to be MCA, cuz he had the best lyrics.

I wore out my 1st 'License to ill' album and had to buy a 2nd! Being a NYC native, I was shocked that 3 Jew kids had made such 'whack' rhymes along with that industry changing sub sonic beat!! They changed the entire 'rap' industry! I'm gonna have to fly into NYC and get me some 'White Castle' and Manischewitz! RIP, Adam,,,, I'll see you in a bit, Bro!! (the Katholic Kid)

Being from a not-so-rich (although very fortunate) family of 6, money for going to see shows was not an easy thing to come by. But as soon as I was of age, Beastie Boys shows in Montreal were never missed (My favorite of which was "Dress to Impress" a few years ago). I  send all my respects to Adams' friends and family. For a man who inspired many, RIP. And may his legacy live on. <3
