Science fiction author Orson Scott Card is famous for his series of novels based on “Ender’s Game,” a classic that is currently in production as a movie … something sci-fi fans have been literally been waiting decades to see happen. But these days he write a regular column for the Greensboro, North Carolina “Rhino Times.” In his most recent column, he shared his experiences from a recent visit to the “Ender’s Game” movie set and revealed that he has a cameo appearance in the film.
It’s interesting to not that he mentions most of the scenes for the movie do not come from the book itself. Apparently the screenwriters took a lot of liberty with adapting the book for the big screen. And the scene in which Card gets his cameo is one of those that has been created from the mind of writer-director Gavin Hood. As Card puts it:
.
“My book was already alive in the mind of every reader. This is writer-director Gavin Hood’s movie, so they were his words, and it was his scene … The scene may or may not work as planned; for all I know, it might not end up in the movie.”
.
I’m pretty sure if it is well executed that fans won’t mind seeing Card have a cameo in the movie, as long as it’s not forced. I know some creators feel the need to be in every film that is based on their works (Stephen King and Stan Lee come immediately to mind), and that doesn’t always work.
.
Orson Scott Card also shared some thoughts on the acting, saying that Asa Butterfield (who plays Ender Wiggin) is an excellent and very professional young actor. His interaction with Harrison Ford (as Colonel Graff) was apparently well received.
.
And while the set design and special effects weren’t based on the book (again), he said he was still pleased with how they turned out.
.
“I love looking at well-designed sets – tough enough to be safe for the actors to work on, yet not wasting a dime on anything that won’t show on camera. Haworth and Procter are a great team.
.
Haworth was art director on a few films you’ve heard of – Thor, TRON: Legacy, Avatar, both Transformers movies, Eagle Eye, Men in Black II, Mission Impossible III and many others. And Procter, though newer, worked with Haworth on the most recent of these.
.
The movie Ender’s Game is going to look great.”
.
I’m glad that Orson Scott Card is happy with the production and that he feels it is coming together nicely, but I’m personally a little disappointed to learn that the screenplay has deviated so much from the original book. I’ll try to reserve judgement until the movie comes out, but it’s going to be hard knowing this now.

woooowwwww
The first night I picked up this book,I read a few chapters, the next night, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. I Loved the book and enjoyed the rest. If the movie deviates much from the movie, I will be disappointed, but if the director is following the story with different scenes, I may yet enjoy it. After all, one the the series was from bean's point of view if I remember correctly.
I loved this book when I was younger! I bet the movie is going to suck though since the writer made up a lot of it. =(
Best book ever. Movie is gonna be awful.
