You might be hard pressed to find someone who expects a lot from the film Battleship, which releases in theaters this weekend. That said, many a Rihanna fan is waiting to see if she can pull off the whole acting thing better than some of her musical peers (Britney Spears, anyone?). While her role in the film might not be Oscar-worthy, early reviews suggest that she pulls of a performance that promises to be the first of many. So, while it’s been a long time since she was up-and-coming in the music world, she’s definitely this week’s “on the rise” actress.

Rihanna’s long been wowing us in her music videos, but much of what fascinates her audiences normally has to do with her stunning good looks and sexy moves. However, one of her most recent videos, that for her single “We Found Love in a Hopeless Place,” definitely showcased a deeper set of skills. In the video, she acts out a passionate and destructive love affair in an affecting performance that garnered her quite a bit of buzz.

The Battleship role, ‘popcorn’ though it might be, is quite the departure from anything Rihanna has ever done before, however. Though critics aren’t exactly giving it the raves they’d give to an indie darling making her debut in Brokeback Mountain: The Sequel, it’s at least widely acknowledged that Rihanna doesn’t embarrass herself in the action-packed role.

Rumors have since been swirling that Rihanna will next play the villain in the sixth Fast and the Furious film, though her rep recently denied them. We’re sure she has no shortage of offers on the table, however, and we’re pretty excited to see what she plans to do next.

We’d love to see Rihanna tackle something a little softer in her next efforts — maybe she could be the heroine in the next Nicholas Sparks adaptation. What would you like to see her do?
