  • WAVE RAPE VOL 2 REVIEW

    review by machinoir (http://www.myspace.com/machinoir)

“tooth_eye” is a solo project which
stands out for a few reasons but at first glance it’s the visuals.
In the case of “Wave Rape Vol. 2” it’s spliced up imagery of
classic looking young female manga faces showing shock and fear
suggesting that perhaps the use of the word rape in the title isn’t
just a way of expressing the creation process, but the album’s
    meaning as well.

This album is made to be disliked. It’s
an ugly mash up of layered cuts that are trippy and often brutal
though feminine. Its most striking feature however is that it’s
uncomfortable. The basic techniques are used well even though the
varied compression of layers threw me off on the first listen in a
few places. Whether this was done intentionally or out of necessity
to get the levels even the result is the same; additional discomfort.
Perhaps the only disappointment is that tracks like “big balls
taint goat” move away from the unease of hectic passages to
awkwardness which seems like thoughtless composition and is more
annoying and drawn out than anything. It’s not enough to detract
from the disturbing nature of the female voice in “grinding that
fucking backstabbing otaku bitch ...” or the low distressed section
through the last half of “idiot tek”.

While the techniques on “Wave Rape
Vol. 2” aren’t particularly interesting, the atmosphere is full
on. It doesn’t resort to the extremes of white noise and pure
volume to achieve its power but instead agitates – acting as a
snuff film and not horror – something truly coarse. Most simply
put; the title “Rape” is apt.

  • tooth_eye RedSK Jason Evil Covelli and Hhhhh 4 way split OUT! REVIEW!

[CPR006] hhhhh, RedSK, Jason "EVIL" Covelli & tooth_eye-"Every Day Is A New Day To Suffer, Our Minds Plague Us More Than We Plague Society"

RedSK, Jason "EVIL" Covelli, & tooth_eye are the among the absolute best guys that I could ever hope to work with. This split was supposed to come out as a c90 alongside "Interested In Hair," however a stream of half-assed used tape decks, cassette issues, and problems with time that were completely my fault, it's coming out six months later. These guys were nothing but understanding, kind, and generous, and I appreciate the heck out of each of them. They've all got future releases lined up with Crumbling Peak, so keep your eyes peeled!
I start off this split with four tracks by hhhhh, using circuit bent electronics, feedback, no-input mixing, and tape loops, ranging from real noisy to pretty calm, or almost ambient.
Next is RedSK. Never shy to change up styles from track to track, Patrick Doyle again shows his understanding of every corner of his genre, and nooks that few seem to have found yet. He starts off with a track called "Bumblebee," in which he uses one of my favorite approaches of his, the minimalistic microphone feedback, accompanied here by a stereo playing rap in the background. From here he moves on to everything from tearing noise to weird glitching to something just a little more jarring than ambient. What sticks out to me here is the track "Mountains Of Sorrow," on which RedSK half shouts, half sings vocals over half strummed, half slammed-on acoustic guitar, showcasing his love of lyrics and subject matter that is so depressing and over the top that one can't tell where seriousness ends and humor begins. At the end of the track, he yelps out the perfect example of this blurry line, repeating the lyrics "Every time I think of you, all I want to do is kill myself."
Third on this split is a track by Jason "EVIL" Covelli which sandwiches two spoken word pieces together into one. Jason "EVIL" Covelli is an artist from Kenosha, WI that calls his spoken word pieces "doomed truths." This has gone on to be the general description of Jason's style. This description is used neither lightly or falsely; Covelli's style makes the listener uncomfortable in more ways than one. He starts off his track following his self-explanatory title, "Degenerate / Psychotic Bastard That Is Me." He talks about his personal opinions of acts deemed degenerative or fetishistic, discussing what is viewed as normal or grotesque, the general public's stand on what's right and wrong, and Jason's own beliefs. He's got a style that can be a little hard to swallow for some, throwing out curse words instead of breaks in speech and giving very opinionated statements, but isn't that what we want? I'm glad to hear a guy stand strongly behind his beliefs if he's going to give them out publicly, not beat around the bush and throw out flimsy words like "um" and "uh." Jason moves on from here to his second piece, voicing his thoughts on insanity, mostly his own. He's very outspoken about being psychotic, and has no shame for anything that he's done. He even states that in the second half of the track, more or less. Despite being a split containing a lot of noisy and odd music, this spoken word piece might be the most difficult piece for many to understand. I think that this is the best part of Jason "EVIL" Covelli. Those that like him love him, and those that can't understand him probably never will.
Lastly, tooth_eye, an artist from Chicago, gave me eight tracks for this split. I would call tooth_eye's genre breakcore, because it sometimes features the fast and arrhythmic drums that can be found within breakcore, but it's still much different than that. He throws samples, drums, and glitches into a microwave with some metal and records the explosion; a tangled, noisy mess of a nature so offbeat that I can't put his style clearly into one genre. It's the weird vocal samples spewed over an even more chaotic mix of drums and unnatural sounds that make these tracks so individual. tooth_eye starts his first track with a sort of remix of that disgustingly poppy '90's dance song "Better Off Alone," and then dives right in to tracks full of distorted Amen breaks and gabber kicks, layered over, or sometimes solely made up of off-the-wall samples of pianos and people talking about Twitter. It's all completely crazy in a real good way.
This is the second Crumbling Peak release to feature artwork by Andrea Holodnick, an extremely talented artist from Bellingham, Washington that mostly deals with photography and collage in a way that manages to easily avoid pretension. Crumbling Peak releases will have a lot more of her artwork in the future. The next release will complete the hat trick.
The split is about eighty minutes long, with 19 tracks total. It comes in a plastic CD sleeve with a collage by Andrea Holodnick wrapped around the CDr and a booklet with all of the information. I've given 5 copies to each artist, leaving me with only a few. I've got extremely few copies, so if I've run out, you'd be best off contacting one of the other artists.

  • LOGOS

This LOGOS holds always but humans always prove unable to understand it, both before hearing it and when they have first heard it. For though all things come to be in accordance with this LOGOS, humans are like the inexperienced when they experience such words and deeds as I set out, distinguishing each in accordance with its nature and saying how it is. But other people fail to notice what they do when awake, just as they forget what they do while asleep. (Diels-Kranz 22B1)
