The Veez: Ultra normally likes to throw in some left-field surprises on the bill (even featuring The Cure last year), and this year’s curve ball is The Veez. The London-reared she-rocking quartet has no fancy gimmicks or novelties, just solid tunes. If the Spice Girls had talent, they still wouldn’t be The Veez ladies, who are truly more camera-ready than those old drag queens. And they won’t be performing anywhere else during Winter Music Conference.
Current mood:dorkyThis weekend the warm, welcoming bosom of Big Cath’s home in South-east London beckoned us to record demos of our newest songs. With the engineering and mixing help of our mate Scott, and the trained ear and tea-making skills of Austin, we toiled from Saturday morning until Sunday night. These six huge tracks are the product of our blood, sweat and tears over the last few months, and we’re very proud of them. Here are a few words about each…
A massive tune beginning with Shay’s beautiful vocal then gradually gathering speed and transforming into a monster freight train from hell with pistons flying, taking off into space with all four of us at the helm. Or something.
Turn Your Back
100% pure rock. With riffs made from 500,000-year-old volcanic lava and a melody carved from granite. Little Cath, Jo and Big Cath stand atop the catchy rhythms like seasoned explorers of the human spirit while Shay climbs even higher amongst the clouds. Maybe I need some sleep.
There He Goes
A schizophrenic femme fatale. One minute this song is a sexily restrained melody over Little Cath’s dirty, chugging guitar, the next it bursts out of its straitjacket for a no-holds-barred romp in the wild. When you hear it you’ll get what I mean. This track gets an explosive reaction when we play it live.
This song makes you feel anything but hopeless – its flowing melody and upbeat tempo gets you up and dancing in seconds. ’Ohhh-ohhh-ohhh let’s leave tonight…’ Let the good times roll!
There Is A Place
Innocent, simple lyrics that will break your heart. It’s the world seen through a child’s eyes, where life stands still and summer lasts a lifetime. Underpinned by pounding instruments and epic production, this song is an uplifting, rousing anthem to a forgotten place in time.
Never Say No
This is an old-school, fast-paced handclap backslap of a work in progress. It’s only just been written so we laid all the parts down in 20 minutes so we can fiddle with it. But not in a pervy way. Well maybe a little bit.
You’ll hear more about these all-conquering demos very soon! Watch this space…
Lots and lots of love,
Current mood:bouncyHelloooo. We'll be blogging a lot more frequently in 2008, because (a) we've got our arses out of the big lovely warm cave we rehearse in to type out a few words on a com…pu…ter, and (b) THERE'S SO MUCH GOING ON!
Friday 29th Feb, Shoreditch
It all starts this Friday, headlining a HUGE night for new music at the Comedy Café in Shoreditch. We've written giant handfuls of new songs over the last few months and will be debuting four of them on Friday! We're all very proud of them and will be very excited to see what you think… hope you like 'em LIVE, LOUD and LYRICAL!
And as it's a night celebrating new music there's The Break, a battle of the bands where the winning band gets to join us playing at Glastonbury this summer, and record with UNKLE. So make sure you check us out in Shoreditch, the flyer's on our homepage so come on down!
Saturday 1st March, Kentish Town
It's the Indy Awards showcase at Bullet Bar in North London. We're so chuffed to be involved with this – it's one of the few ways that up and coming bands are recognised by the industry so it means a lot to us to be nominated. If you'd like to lend your support and vote for The Veez just follow the link on our homepage. A shiny award would look lovely on Big Cath's mantelpiece, but more than that we can't wait to play on Saturday with a bunch of hugely talented unsigned bands….really looking forward to it!
Saturday 15th March, The Veez Vaults
All weekend we'll be holed up in a secret location recording our new tunes until our fingers bleed and our hearts are all poured out. Hurrah!
Friday 28th March, Miami
This is a big one, and Jo has been enjoying constant stomach flips ever since we were asked to play… uhhh!... there's another one. Miami Ultra Music Festival is the closing party for the Winter Music Conference and there are some very big names in dance music playing. So what are we doing playing at a dance music festival? We're opening the main stage on the Friday night, getting everyone hot and bothered ready for a FULL-ON weekend.
We can't wait to fly over to America – Little Cath and Shay haven't been there before so we'll be Thelma and Louise and Louise and Thelma for the weekend in our cowboy hats and boots, YEEE-HAAAW!!!!
… Actually Miami's not exactly the Wild West is it, but the point is we're very excited!
Sunday 4th May, a field in Essex
Bank holiday fun at Myfest, a festival for mostly unsigned bands at North Weald Airfield, Essex. Although this is a long way off and lots is happening between now and then (and we'll let you know of course…) look out for this important festival for NEW MUSIC!
So thanks for reading our new and improved blog; it washes whites whiter than white and comes with 50% more RRRRROCK. We promise we'll keep in touch regularly and please give us a shout about anything you bloody well like. Apart from that.
Lots of love
Jo, Shay, Big Cath and Little Cath
