Cooking up a series of gentle, sparkling demo tracks peppered with the liberal use of quirky instruments (i.e., toy shakers and Casiotone keyboards), the Motifs nodded to dreamy indie pop acts like Lullatone, Au Revoir Simone, and Birdie, just to name a few. With the exception of Hall, the Motifs feature a rotating cast of bandmembers, many of them from other Melbourne-based indie pop acts; as of 2009, the lineup included the likes of Neil Erenstrom, May Esraghi, Chris Hung, and Scott Brewer. The Motifs' debut full-length, Dots, was released on Sweden's Music Is My Girlfriend Records in 2006. Two more releases, the full-length album Away and the Matches EP, were issued the following year on Lost in Found Records and weePOP!, respectively. The Motifs released their third EP in 2008, this time on the German label Edition 59. That year also saw the release of Cross-Paths, an odds and sods mix of new and old tracks, on Melbourne's Knock Yr Socks Off Records. ~ Margaret Reges
