In February 2009, Coastals frontman and guitarist Drew Champion called his longtime friend, drummer Will Dobud to see if he wanted to start a punk band. Burned out, confused, and angry, he needed an outlet to vent his frustration. Drew, Will, and bassist Andre Pagliarini quickly penned 12 songs, and took them to legendary producer Don Zientara (Fugazi, Jimmy Eat World, Minor Threat) at DC’s famed Inner Ear Studios. Tracked live in several overnight sessions, straight to analog tape, with minimal overdubs and no digital editing, “The Coastals” was released to positive reviews from blogs and reviewers that responded to the honest lyrics, diverse influences, solid musicianship, and no-frills punk rock style.

The self-titled record demonstrated The Coastals’ raw potential. Like their biggest influences The Buzzcocks and The Clash, The Coastals had a knack for writing stripped-down and pissed-off music that was also interesting, dynamic, and catchy. Since then, The Coastals have been hard at work refining their craft and polishing their sound while staying true to their punk rock roots. Covering artists from Cock Sparrer to Elliott Smith, “Under The Covers” demonstrated their ability to bring their sound to many different styles. The addition of Stephen Parsons on rhythm guitar added another dimension to their sound.

This Fall, The Coastals are releasing their second album, “Burn White Hot.” While similar in approach, “Burn White Hot” validates their growth as songwriters, musicians, and people. Drew’s deceptively sweet tenor delivers 17 songs about love, anger, addiction, class warfare, and mortality, pervaded by the themes of resilience and finding strength in adversity. These are delivered in memorable melodies over a sonic backdrop that mixes reggae, modern indie, and british invasion influences into the bedrock of raw punk rock.

Burn White Hot is unique in this era of 6 song EP’s, and synth-happy hipsters. All of the 17 songs are stylistically unique, and stand on their own while working together to tell a larger story. The Coastals do not fall back on kitschy instrumentation, or self-indulgent soundscapes, but choose instead to deliver their songs with a refreshing directness and brevity. With Burn White Hot, The Coastals are bringing some much needed fire and integrity back to Rock and Roll.
