Suga Dairo was born in 1974 and raised in Kamakura City, Kanagawa. At school, he aspired to become a biologist, but fell by the wayside and turned to piano instead.
In a practical exam, which was conducted as part of the entrance exams for Department of Jazz at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music, Suga amazed the examiner Yosuke Yamashita by his awe-inspiring piano performance, and ended up entering the College as a member of the inaugural class.
Later he went on to study at Boston’s Berklee College of Music for four years. After returning home, he played in various groups such as Shibusashirazu("Never Be Cool") and Isao Suzuki’s Oma Sound, as well as playing with Akira Sakata and Shota Koyama on many occasions. He is undoubtedly Japan’s only up-and-coming Free Jazz Pianist in the 21st Century.
In 2006, Suga participated in a DVD project “BOYCOTT RHYTHM MACHINE” (Lastrum) in which he attracted attention by playing with Natsumen’s guitarist A×S×E in an intense jam session. He is also a leader of Real Blue, a youth-based conceptual free avant-garde band, as well as a member of other bands like ok.hp and Little Blue. His multifaceted style of play wows even the appreciative jazz fans and is creating more and more hard core fans around the country.
His live performance is always so fiercely, extremely free to the extent that after every show he has bleeding from cuts and scratches all over his body, which is why he is dubbed “Hama no Kyoken (Mad Pianist of Yokohama).”
拝啓、スガ ダイロー様 Thank you for the add. You are wearing very nice costume!! Is that a "Zatoichi? "Komusou"? "Ninjya"? It's so unique~~~!! I'll try to wear "Qunoichi costume" at jazz concert in the future. ;-)
