Randolph - Echoes (Of Lonely Eden) DCD - Cat# Stillmdcd003

Multi-talented Detroit musician Paul Randolph, aka “Randolph”, comes from a musical family. He began honing his musical skills at a very young age. Born in Philadelphia, PA he and his family relocated to Sao Paulo, Brazil when he was six years old. Randolph explains, "It was then not only did I learn to speak a second language, but I also began to really study music. I was playing guitar - my father and I both had the same guitar teacher. The influence of music was huge because music is very much a part of the Brazilian culture."
"My first exposure to music was, primarily, from my Dad. He played jazz trombone in high school and college. He, my mother, and grandparents exposed me to a wide range of musical genres. Ultimately, this all had a major impact on my decision to go into the music business."
Eventually settling in Detroit during his teen years, he graduated from Central Michigan University with a degree in Marketing while continuing to perform music and work a variety of other jobs. Randolph eventually put all of his focus into his calling, music. A versatile musician who plays guitar as well as percussion, the bass is the instrument that Randolph fell in love with. "The person whom I consider my mentor, who really helped me the most, and is one of my favorite bass players, is the late Jaco Pastorius whom I met at a Weather Report concert. I had the opportunity to hang out with him for a few hours. He gave me a lot of great advice and changed how I approached my discipline and dedication to the instrument."
Always a snazzy dresser with a unique sense of style, Randolph comments, "I remember my parents as always being very stylish. My Dad used to have clothes custom-made. My grandmother was a seamstress and my godmother is a designer. So, I’m sure they had something to do with my sense of style.”
Randolph has performed with such greats as Tony Allen, Odetta, and Johnny Johnson, to name a few. He was lead vocalist and bassist for the Detroit-based New Orleans-style funk and blues band Mudpuppy. After his stint with Mudpuppy, he went on to perform and record with Amp Fiddler, iSoul8, As One, Tettory Bad, Zed Bias, and currently, the Berlin-based, Jazzanova. Randolph's music has been categorized into many different genres, pop, rock, neo soul, jazz, funk, blues, and electronic. His first solo CD, "This Is...What It Is" was released on Kenny Dixon, Jr.'s Mahogani Music imprint in 2004. His second solo project, "Lonely Eden" was released in 2007 and featured collaborations with notables, Stephanie McKay ("Broken") and Waajeed of the Platinum Pied Pipers (title track "Lonely Eden").
Although a bit secretive about his latest projects, Randolph does reveal that one of them will be a hybrid of house and dub step music with producer Zed Bias from Manchester, UK. He is also working on a rock/soul project as well as writing his third studio release, which he explains will be an extension of "Lonely Eden". Randolph exclaims, "There is a lot of music that I love, a lot of things that I want to say, and a lot of ways I want to say it." Often branded as one of Detroit's finest musicians (most recently voted Artist of the Year by Real Detroit Weekly publication), we are sure to be pleasantly surprised and pleased with all of Randolph's future musical endeavors.
Randolph's Reviews:
Echoes (Of Lonely Eden) - Out Now on Still Music! (And More!)
Dj Deep: Pure niceness! Both original versions of "BROKEN" AND "LEANIN" are my fav jams so far...
Jimpster / Freerange records: Blimey mate! What a serious collection of music you've got here. The whole thing sounds supurb but I really like the Deetron and Jazzanova mixes for playing out. Amazing. Congrats on a great release mate. Deserves to do really well.
Yannick / RBMA RADiO: Can't wait to play those tunes out.
Dom Servini (Wah Wah 45s / Shook Magazine / Echoes Magazine): This is huge!! Will get plenty of radio play from me and there are some club bangers in there too...
René Josquin / DeBug Mag: Great release. Blowin the big horn. The album itself is strong - damn good productions... that must be the reason why all these superheros deliver remixes. Much re-spect!
Huwston / knowfool / Australia: Man I have been waiting for this for ages - Anything Aaron Jerome and Zed Bias always sets my brain ablaze. Lonely Eden was and still is one of the best contemporary soul records of my generation (I liken it to 'Mama Said' for its guttsyness) and with, Randolph' star really began to shine after a number of guest shots and appearances. Fave mixes, too hard to tell off the stream but it's one of those records you know you're going to be playing for months, especially in the summer.
Q-Burns Abstract Message: What a winner you've got here. Both sets (originals + remixes) are stellar and were a fantastic listen on this Saturday afternoon.
Favorites of the originals include "GPS" and "Valentine." Such soulful stuff, I love it.
The Zed Bias mix of "Golden Days" is far and away my favorite remix here. This will be a long time staple of my club sets, I can tell already. Other mixes making me tingle include Charles Webster's "Claim" mix, Recloose's "GPS" mix, and Deetron's "Leanin'" mix. Solid quality throughout.
Igor / Ibiza Sonica: Cool one. Super fresh. Will play it in my shows. Full support on Ibiza sonica.
Tom Wieland / 7 Samurai: Luvin it! Paul Randolph has one of the most significant soul voices in this decade; radio & Dj support guaranteed!!
Borja / Lovemonk: Woah! Looks like a brilliant release
Velanche / Giant Step: Solid collection of remixes complimenting the original...big names doing the biz. Faves include Aaron Jerome, Recloose, Zed Bias, and Mike Banks, but overall all sort of goodness. Full support!
Marcus 'Makossa' Wagner-Lapierre (FM4 head of music): Very nice, soulful album, great production & rxs...
Lonely Eden
Review by DustyGroove.com: – Dusty Groove
An amazing bit of cosmic soul from Paul Randolph -- a set that seems to take some of the best energy going down on the Detroit scene in recent years, and focus it together with a new sense of power and intensity! Randolph plays bass and sings on the set -- the former in a bumping, funky style that sounds especially nice next to the heavy acoustic drums mixed in alongside the beats -- and the latter in a sweetly crackling way that carries some echoes of 70s Motown, but which also pushes forward in a much more righteous direction. The tunes are quite positive and powerful -- and there's a really stripped-down feel to most of the set -- no overdone production or heavy remixing -- just core small combo instrumentation that's often mostly live, and which maintains a really spontaneous, personal feel for the set. Guests include Stephanie McKay and Waajeed -- but Randolph's clearly the star of the show, and we're hoping the show's one we'll be getting for many years to come! Titles include "Broken", "Soul Brutha", "Earth 2 God", "GPS", "Lonely Eden", "Leanin", "Valentine", "Believer", and "Eda Mae".

Talented Detroit soul vocalist Randolph's (ne Paul Randolph) artistic resume defies easy classifications. He's worked in funk, rock, blues, electronic projects (with As One and Kenny Dixon Jr.), and draws on a little of everything for Lonely Eden. "Claim", featuring Motown force Amp Fiddler, has an almost gospel vocal urgency, as well as spirit-lifting B3 organ riffs. Elsewhere, a sophisticated '80s – style pop R&B aesthetic informs the breezy "Believer" and brassy "Earth 2 God". "Soul Brother" conjures Kool'n The Gang's funk, while "Valentine" has echoes of Randolph's turn with Carl Craig's "Innerzone Orchestra version of "People Make The World Go Round". In the end, Randolph makes his myriad influences into a vocal Paradise.
Jazzanova returns with brand new single
The forth-coming album of Berlin-based DJ and producer collective Jazzanova comes with a guarantee for joyful listening. And the first single, "Let Me Show Ya" (which will be released as a 12-inch single and is also available as an eSingle), gives you an auspicious foretaste of what to expect from the entire album. For the recording of this lively, immediately ear-catching tune, Jazzanova hooked up in the recording studio with soul shooting-star Paul Randolph. Four years ago, the Detroit-dwelling singer and bass player caused a sensation with his debut album "Randolph Says, 'This Is... What It'". His vast experience includes working with an array of blues and rock bands as well as collaborations with producers of electronic music. With such a diverse background Paul Randolph blends in perfectly with Jazzanova's eclecticism. The proof for this is their groovy single "Let Me Show Ya". The new Jazzanova album will be released in October and promises some more pleasant (and ear-pleasing) surprises.
