.. ........ ..1977年、イラストレーターの中西、スタイリストの佐藤、グラフィク・デザイナーの立花が中心となって結成。 1979年、イギリス・ラフトレードから「COPY/ROBOT」で日本に先駆 け英国デビュー、翌1980年1月にシングル「TOP SECRET MAN」とアルバム『WELCOME PLASTICS』で日本デビューを果たす。 そのサウンドは、同時期デビューしたYMO、P-Model、ヒカシューらと共に、次世代のジャンル"テクノポップ"として注目される。中でも個性的で ファッショナブルなメンバーを揃えるPLASTICSは「テクノポップの代表バンド」として業界内外で注目を集める。1stアルバム発売後、B-52's との共演をきっかけとしたUSツアーから海外での活動が活発化。US/UK大手アイランドレコードとの契約による3rdアルバム 『WELCOMEBACK』の全世界発売を前後して、米欧でのリリースツアー、ラモーンズやトーキング・ヘッズなど一線級アーティストとの共演など国境を 超えた精力的な活動を展開した。しかし、まさに「これから」と思われていた1981年12月、突如解散。 デビューから実質2年間のバンド活動に終わりを遂げた。ファッション、デザインを音楽と同様に重視したイメージコンセプトや日・米・欧と国境を跨いだグローバルな活動範囲、デビューからわずか2年人気絶頂のうちに解散したそのライトな感覚など、その活動スタイルは今なお多くのフォロワーを生んでいる。 .. .. In 1977, Nakanishi (an illustrator), Sato (a stylist) and Tachibana (a graphic designer) got together to form PLASTICS. In 1979 they debuted first in the UK with their album "COPY/ROBOT," on the British label Rough Trade. In January of the next year, they made their Japan debut with the single "TOP SECRET MAN" and the album "WELCOME PLASTICS." Their sound, which was similar to such legendary groups that were active at the time, YMO, P-Model and Hikashu, was described as "techno pop" and caught the attention of many in the music industry. The members of PLASTICS, with their unique personalities and fashion sense, were called the leading "technopop" band of the time. After their first album, taking inspiration from a successful performance with the B-52's, PLASTICS started a US tour that served to increase their fame overseas. They signed a deal with the giant US/UK label Island Records to release their third album "WELCOMEBACK" and did a release tour that spanned both the US and Europe, where they performed with such big artists as the Ramones and Talking Heads. In December of 1981, just when things looked like they were going to really take off, the band suddenly decided to break up--their two years as PLASTICS had come to a sudden and untimely end. PLASTICS was a band that placed as much importance on fashion and design as the music, and they successfully crossed cultural barriers between Japan, the US, and Europe. Their unabashed break-up at the peak of their success shows they clearly lived by the philosophy that underlined their music--don't take things too seriously. Musician, graphic designer and contemporary art writer. Hajime studied graphic design at WorkShop MU!! and in 1976 formed the technopop band PLASTICS, where he played guitar in a style that could be called early "alternative guitar." In 1980 they release an album from Island Records and toured all of the US and Europe. When PLASTICS broke up in 1982, Hajime hired musician Yukihiro Takahashi to work as producer on his first solo album called "H." He not only directed the recording of the album but used instruments he had made himself. Afterwards, Hajime toured Japan with Saeko Suzuki and Hiroyasu Yaguchi. In 1987, in an effort to familiarize himself with the film world, he played the role of an interpretor in the movie "The Last Emperor." As a designer he has worked on album covers, videos, and stage props for artists such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Yukihiro Takahashi, Akiko Yano, and the TALKING HEADS (as well as for himself). Hajime has also been active in typography, and won the ADC top prize in 1991. In 1997 he released "Low Power," his first album in five years since "Bambi," he then released the related "Low Powers Shinshi." In November of 1979, they debuted with their album "COPY/ROBOT" released by a British indies label. PLASTICS received wide recognition as a tecnhopop band. Soon after their debut, they released two additional albums "ORIGATO PLASTICS" and "WELCOME BACK" (1981). After the final show of their world tour in New York city, the band suddenly broke up. In 1981, Toshio Nakanishi formed MELON with Chika Sato. In 1982, he announced the release of his album "Do You Like Japan?" with Haruomi Hosono, Yukihiro Takahashi, Masami Tsuchiya, and Moichi Kuwahara. Toshio continued to play shows at Pithecantropus Electus and worked on the project WATER MELON GROUP in the meantime. MELON'S music retained some of its techno image, but started to incorporate urban beats, and by the release of the album "Deep Cut" in 1987, they had entered the hip hop world. The members of the group at that time were: Toshio Nakanishi, Chika Sato, Gota Yashiki, and Masayuki Kudo. In 1987 Toshio started the label MAJOR FORCE with Masayuki Kudo, Gota Yashiki, Hiroshi Fujihara, and Kan Takagi to create an platform to release DJ music. Masahide Sakuma joined the progressive rock band Yoninbayashi as a bassist in 1975, and that launched his career as a professional musician and composer. In 1978 he joined PLASTICS. After he produced P-Model in 1979, he began to work full-time as a producer. At the time, Masahide also produced music for commercials, movies, and Japanese "idols." In 1984 he released his first solo album "Lisa" on JVC Records. From then on he has worked as a producer for more than 130 artists such as BOOWY, StreetSliders, Up-beat, Blue Hearts, GLAY, Judy And Mary, Hysteric Blue, Elephant Machinegun, and Kinniku Shojotai.
