    Arne Sweetie!
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year,  Darling!
    Love always, Annette, "That's All."
    My first audition!
"I'm not doing so well. I'm all a quivering..."
    go to:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPoeggykeXc
In 1926 Annette Hanshaw had an audition playing the piano and singing for Pathe records in which she created two recordings - a pair of 3 song medleys using popular tunes from 1925 and 1926. She was soon a record star and this first test recording fell into obscurity. Here is a chance to once again listen to these recordings - to hear her just before she emerged onto the public scene.

"She was probably scared to death. On her first test pressing for Pathé you can hear her say, “I’m not doing so well, I am all a quivering”. Imagine how she felt when she had to make her first record with Red Nichols and Miff Mole! But even on some of her first recordings something was apparent. She could mimic, she could laugh, she could carry a tune with personality and she could become part of the band. In essence she could carry her voice as another musical instrument.
Tommy Dorsey once said of her that she was a “musician’s singer”. Maybe it was because of her shyness, her character, her desire to get the tune just right that they ended up doing 4 or 5 takes on many tunes. Nevertheless, the musicians loved her. At the time there were many good jazz musicians but very few good jazz singers. To have the musicians love her was probably her greatest asset."

A peaceful and safe Christmas for everyone everywhere. By the time I reached my final scene with the United States Air Force and its voyage of war discoveries I was crying, savvy mate? --weeping for the inconsolable losses, the desperate decisions, the long death of innocence.

A first grader should understand that his or her culture isn't a rational invention; that there are thousands of other cultures and they all work pretty well; that all cultures function on faith rather than truth; that there are lots of alternatives to our own society. Cultural relativity is defensible and attractive. It's also a source of hope. It means we don't have to continue this way if we don't like it.

    When reindeer go flying,
    and horses do neigh,
    the snow laughs and whispers,
    ‘tis near Christmas Day.

Here's a rare 1972 Interview with Jack Cullen. It's a little long, so it's cut it into two parts in order to post it. Jack Cullen was a famous radio host who played old music on CKNW Vancouver Radio in Canada. Jack Cullen (1922 - 2002)
Annette Hanshaw (October 18, 1901 - March 13, 1985) was one of the first great female jazz singers Of the 1920's and 1930's.
