    we started off by playing monk tunes. that was approximately 2 and a half years ago. after a few gigs flip and i decided to found a band. actally we had two or three different names before we settled for a classic " so and so quintet " . but not for long, our new name is short and simple and we think this one could be the the final decision. one of our names was UGLY BEAUTY- named after a beautyful ballad written by thelonious monk. so after we quit playing monk, flip has brought his tunes and i put lyrics to a lot of them. some of them just stayed without lyrics. singing the themes without words, using the voice as an instrument gives a singer an even greater range of variety to explore the sound of the voice and use it in all kinds of different and unusual manners. this is the great thing about human voice in music- it can be used to tell a story in words and melody or to tell a story with melody, sounds and improvisation. about half a year ago i brought some tunes of mine into the band and we found that it fitted quite well. that changed the sound of the band and formed a new symbiosis. the wonderful thing about the vibes is that it gives enough space and clarity for the different colours of the voice to unfold. right now we..re working on an interesting project with a string ensemble- "The Koan Project". flip has arranged a few tunes of his for this purpose and we performed a few of the compositions at the jazzwerkstatt 2007 and at the cornelia giese fonds concert in porgy& bess also in 2007. soon there will be a whole progamm of about 15 tunes, which im really looking forward to. the premiere will be at vienna..s musikverein on the 9th of march, 2009. in august 2008 our debut album is coming out in japan and in fall its coming out in europe. also we are touring austria, switzerland, germany, slowenia in august and japan in september this year. i..m very excited!!!!!!!! Nowadays we are expanding the band. Two more wonderful musicians are joining us: Alegre Correa and Martin Eberle. In January 20010 we are making our next Album under my own Name: Lana Cencic..s Debut .....

    so Lana&Flip = the singer and the vibes player who founded the band but there..s actually five of us. flip philipp plays the vibes like a loonatic-i love him! and he composes these crazy, difficult tunes. it makes us all sweat. and he arranges the stuff for the string project we..re on now. great musician and a crazy mother f.... ! wolfi rainer is our wonderful drummer - one of the best young drummers in austria and one of the least who can play flips music. he is our anchor and our impetus ! a super talented musician who supports each and every one of us in a different way. we..ve got this young sax player. he..s unbelievable. this guy is soon going to concer the world :-))) , no i mean it - this young musician is a great inspiration to have in the band. on the bass there..s roby jukic - a wicked musician from slovenia, so proud to be able to play with this guy. also - not easy to play the bass for flips tunes !!!! a super musician!! hopefully he..s going to move soon to vienna- we miss him !! and then there..s me. i..m the singer, i write our lyrics and i also compose for the band. I think its useful having at least one female in the band ;-) !!!!

    This is pure, contemporary Jazz which, never humorless or cold, blows like a magnificent breeze through the window. Unpretenscious, but never loosing its virtousity, the tracks on this album tell tales, always in a free and confident manner, of the eternal search for understanding ones surroundings, internal peace and all the other big questions of our time. No where to be found are over-used or farsical phrases, every word is characterized by a serious quest for purity and truth. The clear, flexible and perfectly intonated vocal presentation by Lana Cencic is what gives the music of this Ensemble such a enjoyable quality. Throughout the album the musicianship, be it instrumental or vocal, is at comfortable ease so that even compositional challenges are playfully overcome.
