アヴァンギャルド・ジャズからクラブシーンを熱狂させるダンス・ミュージックまでをカバーする鬼才。1984 年プロデビュー後、山下洋輔グループなどを経て、「デートコース・ペンタゴン・ロイヤルガーデン」「スパンクハッピー」といったプロジェクトを立ち上げるも、2004 年にジャズ回帰宣言をし、ソロ・アルバム「デギュスタシオン・ア・ジャズ」、「南米のエリザベス・テイラー」を発表。2006 年7月にUA×菊地成孔名義で発表したスタンダード・ジャズ・アルバム「cure jazz」が大ヒット。2007 年12月には初のBunkamuraオーチャードホール公演を成功させ、2008 年からは菊地成孔ダブ・セクステット、菊地成孔とペペ・トルメント・アスカラールで活動中。最新作は菊地成孔とペペ・トルメント・アスカラール「New York Hell Sonic Ballet」(ewe)。

音楽講師としても私塾「ペンギン音楽大学」を主宰するほか、映画美学校でも教鞭を執り、さらに07年東京藝術大学、08年慶應義塾大学、09年は再び東京藝術大学で講師を務める。また、驚異的な博識と饒舌な文体で、エッセイストとして も高い評価を受け、音楽雑誌、ファッション雑誌、文芸誌など、多彩な媒体で活躍中。

Born in June 14. 1963,

a producer, a composer, an arranger, a saxophone player, a singer, has an amazing ability to assemble many music of diverse, different,cultural background to organize into one form of new music. The results are often beautiful,and magical. The music styles he dressed in are always diverse, and intoxicating.
He started his professional career as saxophone player, and invited to Yosuke Yamashita's group (avant gard jazz pianist with international fame) in 1984, which gave him a recognition as promising musician. Since then, he has been a part of the historically important events, bands in Jazz,and other advanced music in Japan, together with Yoshihide Otomo of same generation.
It was 1998 when he started producing his own big band "the Date Course Pentagon Royal Garden" , which is new jazz music under the influence of techno, house, so-called "club culture". And also he started pop duo unit, called "Spank Happy". In the year of 2004, he suddenly made an interesting manifesto, announcing " the return to Jazz music" ,and produced an album "degustation a jazz", which consists of 31 short fragments of music in possibly,different forms.Since then, he produced his own music with East works Entertainment up until now. Dub Sextet (a tribute to Miles Music of 60's ), and Pepe tormento azcarar(chamber orchestra with bandoneon, string quartet, 2 percussionists, harp, piano, bass, saxes )
Currently he started recognized as a talented producer of film music, with the work of "Until the Lights Come Back" (Asmik Ace), "10 Minutes Older"(Nikkatsu),"The Pavillion "Salamandre""(Tokyo Theatres / Style Jam),"Ame no machi"(Progressive Pictures) He has deeply addicted with Film. He adopted some music from JLG for his own music.
As a recording producer, he produced an album with UA "Cure Jazz" (Victor Entertainement Inc)
He is also known as a professional music teacher, music theorist, essayist with many books on music theory, and martial arts,and regular column about fashion, and music in magazines . He had his classes at Tokyo University, Tokyo Geijutsu College,and now, teaches at Keio University and private schools.
