    Want to be a promoter...?

    Don't, unless...

... you care about the music you're promoting (it's not a breadwinner for the promoter),

... you care about the audience at your gigs (people pay good money for their tickets - welcome them, get to know them, keep them informed and they will reward you with repeat visits)

... you plan to greet the band as if they were guests at your home (feed them, care for them, treat them well and they will invariably reward you and your audience with a great show),

... you expect to pay the band well (how much do you think it costs to keep a tour on the road, especially an independent artist/label? Worthwhile guarantees - and good percentage breaks that favour the band. A 50/50 split just doesn't cut it!)

... you are prepared to battle against the self-serving apathy of the local press who couldn't give a rat's ass about your show - unless they want to get on the guest list,

Do it only for good and honourable reasons, because there are times when you're going to feel like it's a thankless task - it's at those times you will remember that Mark Eitzel (and Carl Johns) called you "the best promoters in the world", and that there are people willing to pay to attend your shows often based purely on your recommendation and at those times you will know that it's good to be damn proud of what you have achieved.

Coal Country, Shane, Coalminer's Daughter, The Appalachians, Once Upon A Time in The West, The Crimson Pirate, Taxi Driver, Miller's Crossing, My Neighbour Totoro, Pan's Labyrinth (anti-fascist faeries: genius!), Kung Fu Panda (esp. the part where the bad guy escapes from prison - wow!)... and La Fracture Du Myocarde - which I have at last on DVD, thanks to Frank: every bit as good as I remember from 18 years ago. My life is a little more complete :-)

About me:

The doors to the GPOS closed in November 2009, at least for 'gig' work. Well, they did... but like all good saloon doors they swing both ways, and although it took a year they're momentarily OPEN AGAIN!* You can still catch the Gilded Palace Radio Show regularly on Totally Radio (visit any time, the show streams on-demand). Current show ('til 29th April 2011) features new songs from MY MORNING JACKET, NINJA GUN and REDLANDS PALOMINO CO. Gilded Palace Radio Show.. There's also a Gilded Palace blog: http://gildedpalaceofsin.blogspot.com/ where you'll find updates on the radio show as well as occasional ramblings on other stuff that moves us to rattle a keyboard. Follow us; go on, it'll make us feel wanted ;-)

Forthcoming shows in Brighton that may interest 'Sinners'...

April 28th - TWO COW GARAGE - Prince Albert May 6th - AUSTIN LUCAS + Digger BARNES - Prince Albert May 7th - HANS CHEW - The Palmeira, Hove May 17th - PETER CASE - Green Door Store (under station) October 23rd - GOOD LUCK MOUNTAIN (née TANDY) + ANA EGGE - Prince Albert

..What we did:.. For nine years, The Gilded Palace of Sin posse brought the best in Americana and alt.country to the South Coast town of Brighton. Sadly, as with all good things, an end had to come. If you ever came to a show, thank you - if you came back because you liked what we did, thank you all the more. We always endeavoured to make our nights special: gigs are potentially magical events, and there's an alchemical mix of factors involved. We did what we could: you brought the party - and the bands more often than not responded with vigour. Our work is done.

Who I'd like to meet:

Someone with a pot of money and correspondingly great taste in music, who could buy us a venue and keep great Americana coming to Brighton
