Bio
.......... .. .. Originally from Leningrad, USSR, Dmitri was steered towards jazz music by his father. Dmitri abandoned an engineering career to become a professional musician. He graduated from Mussorgsky College of Music and taught bass there after graduation. He started playing at local jazz clubs and toured and recorded with leading Russian jazz musicians. At the age of 24 he was voted "Discovery of the Year" by the Soviet Jazz Federation and for the next several years was listed among the top bassists of the country. Inspired by American Jazz Dmitri came to New York in 1991. He received a scholarship to study with bassist Ron Carter while earning his Masters degree in musical performance at the City College of New York. Asked by Carter he wrote a book "Ron Carter Collection: Note-for-Note Solo Transcriptions to 19 songs," which was published by Hal Leonard Corporation. Making a living in New York as a bass player over the years Dmitri has worked, toured or recorded with many wonderful musicians: Mark Murphy, Eric Alexander, Richie Cole, Woody Allen, Anthony Wonsey, Bill Ware, Johnny Colon, etc. He performed at such well-known New York venues as Iridium, Birdland, Smoke, Jazz at Lincoln Center Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, Rose Hall, Café Carlyle, Symphony Space, Flushing Town Hall, Small's, Knitting Factory, as well as such Festivals as: JVC Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Rochester Jazz Festival, "Knitting Factory 15th Anniversary European Tour", Peter And Paul Jazz Festival, Hermitage Garden Festival, etc. Besides performing with groups as a Bassist, Dmitri is a composer and also leads his own group which recently preformed at Dizzy's Club in New York City. He released 5 CD's as a leader or co-leader. -

Sounds Like
MEETING POINT: Quintessence (Challenge CR 73291) .. What an Ensemble! And it keeps musically to what its name promises... "Quintessence" serves as the best example of how exciting and different is hard-bop of this day and defends, in an exponential position, its place in Jazz. Each single title sounds like a manifest of virtuosic challenge… A grand Quintet has found each other and one wants to wish to it survival and a long life with many more musical "starry hours" on a similar high level. Jörg Konrad / JAZZ PODIUM (Translated by Chris Gillespie) .... DMITRI KOLESNIK: Five Corners (Challenge) .. Fashions change, but classic cool never goes out of style: the second CD by Russian-born bassist Kolesnik feels right from the first note. Hipster shuffles, bop burners and dreamy ballads are all performed with urbane aplomb by a dynamite band… Everything clicks. Forrest Dylan Bryant/JAZZ TIMES .... I am still listening to this CD, and am sure that you will want to hear it again and again. RON CARTER .... If you don't know any better, you would think that every piece is a classic. SLAGWERKKRANTT (Drummers Magazine) .... This wonderful recording of ten straight-ahead original compositions … is a delight… As a composer (Kolesnik) is capable of writing music of great emotional content; from full out swingers to light and clever mid-tempo masterpieces and lush ballads… Thomas R. Erdmann/JAZZREVIEW.COM .... … Kolesnik is a promising talent. Ken Dryden/ALL MUSIC GUIDE .... DMITRI KOLESNIK: Blues For Dad (Bohema Music CDBMR 103207) .. One can see why (Ron) Carter, who contributes a liner-note to the debut album, would enjoy Kolesnik's sound, big and warm, with an impressively intelligent approach to the note-choice. Given that, it's no surprise that he should also be an impressive composer. Everything except Kondakov's "New York Wind", a long blowing piece, is credited to the bassist, but what's nice is how well he tailors his line to the talents of the band. "Blues For Dad" is terrific and the autobiographical thread continues with "Home", "Waltz For B.E." (Bill Evans we'd guess) and "White Nights, Gray Days". It's a record full of plangent nostalgia but also resolute ambition. A most auspicious debut. "The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings. Ninth edition." By Richard Cook & Brian Morton. .... I have listened to the album "Blues For Dad"… and have been enjoying every minute of it… I am so happy to hear Dmitri Kolesnik in this setting, as his sound is warm and big, and his choice of notes is truly inspirational. His playing continues to grow and make his presence on New York jazz scene necessary. His compositions also merit close attention. This is a wonderful recording! RON CARTER
