A central theme on Dave's album involves a strong sense of place and time.
For Dave, Manchester in the 1950s and 1960s. I wasn't in Manchester at that
time, I was over in Leeds, growing up as a teenager; and strangely at some
brief point glimpsing Dave's old band, St Louis Union, on Top Of The Pops.
Anyway, a sense of place, and how time is sweet poison, they're very strong
things for me. And I wanted to write about one of the strongest senses of
place and time I've experienced in many a year. I know, the boring old
Romans, but the lyrics are only very very incidentally about the Romans. And
it definitely all happened for me one day, in Rome's ancient centre, up on
the Palatine Hill. It was a feeling that nearly took the top of my head off.

The striking childhood memory that inspired the collection ....is of Dave being taken to see Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who, after becoming the first man in space in 1961, made an appearance at the Amalgamated Union of Foundry Workers in Brook’s Bar, Manchester, in a show of proletarian solidarity.....

Dave was introduced to Howard Devoto in Manchester during the 1977 ....

The two have worked together subsequently in Magazine and Luxuria, ....
and together they have composed one of the album's centre pieces in ....
'Via Sacra', which in turn lit the spark to the recent Magazine reformation.....
