Influences
ALL Blues, ALL Rock!!!!Cracker was born Carson Daily Wood somewhere in the South, some time in the 60's. His beginning is a little vague, due to the fact he was an orphan. As Cracker likes to say, he was touring at an early age…a tour of foster homes that is! Though he doesn't know his parents, his father is rumored to be a member of Lynard Skynard. His mother is thought to be a groupie, who had relations with every member of that band. Another rumor, however, suggests his parents could have been hillbillies, who were actually brother and sister. Neither rumor has been proven as fact. After dropping out of school and leaving the foster care program at 16 years of age, Cracker set out to pursue his dream of rock stardom. Shortly thereafter, Cracker landed a job at the local carnival in the dime toss booth. He caught a carnival-goer by the name of Randi Rage stealing dimes one night. After learning Randi was a guitar virtuoso, Cracker decided not to turn him in to the authorities. Instead, the 2 started that night what would go on to become WHITE GREAT. They found drummer Chris Criss playing with his band CHRIS CRISS at the Troubadour. Chris wasn't interested initially in joining WHITE GREAT. He changed his mind, however, when the other members of CHRIS CRISS decided to kick Chris Criss out of CHRIS CRISS. WHITE GREAT went on to become one of the top bands playing on the Sunset Strip from 1979-1982. Cracker likes to boast of the band's success spanning two decades…the 1970's and 1980's. He doesn't realize this is only three years. WHITE GREAT truly was one hit away, from becoming a one hit wonder. Though they were never signed to a major record label, they did sell 37 cassettes and 62 12-inch vinyl singles out of the back of Chris's trunk…for a total of 99 units sold...almost breaking that milestone 100 mark. After finding out Chris was skimming money off the top of their cassette sales, Cracker and Randi decided they had no choice but to kick Chris out of the band. After much debate, Cracker insisted on not replacing the drummer. His goal was to make WHITE GREAT the biggest heavy metal band without a drummer. As most people would predict, this formula did not work. WHITE GREAT was over. Cracker and Randi never spoke again and this was the beginning of Cracker's downward spiral. He was soon being arrested on a regular basis for a series of petty crimes. The charges ranged from writing bad checks to impersonating George Michael from WHAM! at the AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS. It was at this award show that Cracker got his first taste of fame by going up on stage to accept George Michael's award. George Michael was outraged that someone actually thought he looked like Cracker. After Cracker's last stint in Ruggsville County Jail, he ended up living in a dumpster behind the famous Sunset Strip club, Gazzarri's. This is where Cracker's life took a turn for the better. Fate stepped in on a cold night in Los Angeles during October of 1983. A world-famous Doo-Wop group was playing a gig in Los Angeles. Morris Mack was performing with the group that night. He went behind Gazzarri's to get some fresh air and to take a leak…(the men's room line inside was too long). As he relieved himself on a dumpster, he heard a voice coming from underneath all the trash. Morris was unknowingly peeing on Cracker's home and meeting his future band mate for the first time. Morris pulled Cracker out of the dumpster and offered to buy him something to eat. Cracker declined and showed Morris the empty saltine wrappers all around him. This was Crackers main food source for the year he was homeless. He could get as many free saltine cracker packets as he wanted from an old WHITE GREAT groupie, who was now a waitress at The Rainbow Bar and Grill. Morris felt he had just met someone who needed a little guidance, so he wrote his phone number down on an item he pulled from the dumpster. Coincidentally, this item was a Gazzarri's drink coaster. His parting words to Cracker that pivotal night were, “Boy, you've got to get yourself right.” During that historic first meeting, Cracker never bothered to give Morris his name (which was still Carson Wood at the time). Morris, after seeing all the saltine wrappers, decided to give Carson the nickname of Cracker. Though Morris did introduce himself that night, Cracker couldn't remember his name. Short-term memory loss and a low IQ were to blame. Since Morris wrote his phone number on a coaster, Cracker thought that would make an appropriate nickname for his new friend. That was the beginning of the magical combination called CRACKER AND A COASTER. Their journey to become one of the biggest rhythm and blues/rock bands had begun. After 23 years of singing the blues, rockin' hard and touring the world, they're still going strong. -
