THE FLOWER KINGS - The Story

The Flower Kings is a rockgroup from Sweden that play melodic art & progressive- rock. The band started in 1994 as a result of the interest in Stolt's solo album "The Flower King", Flowerkings (TFK) quickly became somewhat of a phenomenon in the progressive rock community for everyone that once loved bands like Pink Floyd, Genesis, Zappa, UK, Utopia, Yes, ELP, King Crimson,Gentle Giant or Focus.
Building on the success of albums like "Retropolis" and the already classic double CD's "Stardust We Are" -97 and "Flower Power" -99 they toured Europe, Japan & South America and started to build a worldwide following.
Successful tours resulted in the recording of the live album, "Alive On Planet Earth", which was compiled from shows in both the USA and Japan -98 & -99. It shows the trademark sound of The Flower Kings have as much in common with Mozart, Debussy, Andrew Lloyd Webber or Miles Davis as with Pink Floyd,The Beatles, Bowie or Yes.

Same year Flower Kings signed to German label Inside Out Music in 1999. At that time Roine Stolt is keeping himself busy with numerous sideprojects around the world like TransAtlantic (alongside Mike Portnoy, Neal Morse & Pete Trewavas), plus the reunion of Swedish progrockers KAIPA, his 70's band.
Another one is Andy Tillisons band "Tangent" CD featuring "Van Der Graaf Generator" saxman David Jackson and the obscure "Flying Food Circus" project led by avant garde percussionist Hasse Bruniusson.



With the albums "Space Revolver" 2000 and "The Rainmaker" released in September 2001 The Flower Kings sound shifted to a more accessible level but maintains all the elements that have established this band as one of those most colourful exponents of melodic progressive rock in the world today.
In November 2002 Flower Kings released yet another astonishing and adventurous musical statement : "Unfold The Future". A double CD containing everything from classic symphonic rock in pure 70's fashion to weird Zappaesque or Miles Davis like early 70's fusion, there's even the odd pop song,new drummer Zoltan Csorsz joined the band and it propelled into a more fusion/jazz style of prog with complex rhythms and polyrhytmic extravaganzas.

Xtra member Daniel Gildenlöw from "Pain Of Salvation" joined in 2002 and added his extravagant soulful vocal harmonies,percussion and additional guitar .

Not unlike bands like Phish or Grateful Dead, by incorporating jamming and new twists to every show Flower Kings have built a devoted fanbase of "Flowerheads" that follow them all over the globe, Europe, USA, Japan, Canada, South America. .



Since the early 2000 they have continued to florish and blossom in most spectacular ways, becoming a solid live act ,doing yet another USA and Euro tour every year to raving reviews .
2 Double Live DVD's have done remarkably well for the band,"Meet The Flowerkings" from 2003 and the latest one called "INSTANT DELIVERY". Now there are also plans for another DVD, from the European tour 2007 that also featured guesting King Crimson drummer Pat Mastelotto. Possibly to be released early 2010 on Jonas Reingolds new label REINGOLD RECORDS - www.reingoldrecords.com

Roine Stolt is also releasing solo albums ,"Hydrophonia" in 1998 and the latest one "Wall StreetVoodoo"in 2005 ,an ambitious double album that reveal some of Roine's old blues guitar roots with plenty of solos that reminds of the late 60's and early 70's guitardriven and jammy bluesrock,with a nod to old heroes like Peter Green,Paul Kossoff, Duane Allman, Robin Trower & Eric Clapton. Roine's old Transatlantic buddy Neal Morse is singing and playing Hammond organ on a few trax.



Nov 2007 saw Flowerkings release one of the bands most ambitious albums in a long time "THE SUM OF NO EVIL" a true return to the early 90's TFK releases.

Lately (2009) Roine has been involved in 3 new fabulous albums , AGENTS OF MERCY - "The Fading Ghosts Of Twilight" with singer extravanganziac NAD SYLVAN , "3rd WORLD ELECTRIC" - "Kilimanjaro Seceret Brew" , a fusion noveau full retro album of 70's funk and rockjazz with among others DAVE WECKL (of Chick Corea Band, Mike Stern etc ) , saxplayer KARL MARTIN ALMQVIST, percussionist AYI SOLOMON, bassist JONAS REINGOLD and drummer ace ZOLTAN CSÖRSZ etc.

The latest and most sensational is the return of prog rock supergroup TRANSATLANTIC with the extrordinary new album "THE WHIRLWIND".

REVIEW OF "ROAD BACK HOME":


"When I bought this cd I was a little bit wary that I was just spending money for more Flower Kings stuff that I already own from the back catalogue. What seems even more bizarre is buying a compilation of remastered and tweaked tracks that are only a year or two old (Paradox Hotel). My other trepidation is messing with tracks that are so special in the memory and the heart (sounds cheesy, but the flower kings reach parts other bands can't reach). I was dreading to think how you can make classics such as the 'ghost of the red cloud', 'world without a heart', 'rhythm of the sea' to name but a few any better without ruining the very fabric of what made them so special in the first place. I can't honestly begin to express what a genius Roine Stolt is. Not only are these songs crisper, clearer and better; they seem more vital, more alive and even more personal than ever before. These tracks are just an emotional overload as everything you previously loved about flower kings comes flooding back with a new vibrancy and a passion for music that no other band can come close to (to me anyway!) What's probably most surprising is that the track 'What if God is alone' from the Paradox Hotel (still in its infancy) could be made to sound any better. How do you re-jig a 1 year old song and make it sound twice as good? Ask Roine Stolt coz I don't have a clue!
A must have for any Flower Kings fans out there, or anyone that wishes to find an awe inspiring band of limitless talent and unsurpassed music creation. It's not a waste of money if you have all the back catalogue. It's just another Flower Kings Gem".
