ALICIA SALDENHA (pronounced SAL-DAY-NYA) was born immersed in the rich musical and cultural waters of the twin island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, home to calypso, steelpan, soca, chutney and rapso music. As a songwriter, her music reflects this unique heritage, embracing influences from jazz to reggae. Alicia has performed at music festivals, concert halls and jazz bars around the world. In addition to being a professional vocalist and composer, Alicia Saldenha's resumé includes a long and impressive list of experiences - as actress, dancer, scholar and teacher. Take your time, look around and enjoy! ********************************************************************************************************************** アリシア・サルデイニャはカリブ海に浮かぶトリニダード・トバゴ共和国、トリニダード島に生まれた。幼い頃から歌やダンスに親しむようになり、高校を卒業するとカリブ諸国やアメリカのミュージカルのツアーへも参加するようになった。やがてカリブ諸国のテレビや映画など活動の場を広げたが、言語を学ぶためその後イギリスへ渡る。イギリスでも大好きな音楽を続けるなかBBCナショナル・コーラス・オブ・ウェールズ(BBC National Chorus of Wales)と共演を果たした。 ここで彼女にとって大きな転機が訪れる。ヨーロッパに渡ってすぐにジャズの虜になり、彼女の音楽性は一変。以降、イタリアのウンブリア・ジャズフェスティバルをはじめ、フランスのニース・ジャズフェスティバル、大阪のブルーノートなど、ヨーロッパや日本の各地でジャズに傾倒した演奏活動を行うようになる。ニース・ジャズフェスティバルではジョージ・クリントン(George Clinton)率いるPファンク(P-Funk)と共演、さらに伝説のジャズ・スティールドラム奏者、オセロ・モリノー(Othello Molineaux)の2005年と2007年日本ツアーにも招かれた。 現在は大学に通うため、日本に在住している。大手レーベルと契約してない"外国人アーティスト"にとって決して恵まれた環境とはいえないだろう。それでも彼女は今まさに、人種、文化、言語の壁を越えて、大阪の女性ナンバーワンボーカルへとめざましく成長しつつあるのだ。 彼女はソウルのシンガーソングライター、バンドリーダーとして、クラッシックソウル、ジャズ、ファンク、レゲーのほか、オリジナル曲も日本各地で演奏している。彼女のショーは躍動感とエネルギーに満ちあふれる。バンドメンバーは、平岡孝賀(Drums)、jaz'pressoの荻野哲史(Bass)、村治進(Steelpan)、indigo jam unitの笹井BJ克彦(Bass)、遠藤真理子(Sax)、中島岳(Guitar)、jaz'pressoの増田みずほ(Keys)、Zardの大楠雄蔵(Keys)ら、関西トップクラスのミュージシャンだ。 さらに、国際的ミュージシャンのボビー・リケッツ(Bobby Ricketts・デンマーク)、エズラ・ブラウン(Ezra Brown・アメリカ)、黒田卓也(アメリカ)の来日中に、自身のバンドに招いて頻繁に共演。最近は日本のベイシスレコード契約アーティストnu jazz bandやindigo jam unit、そして伝説的ファンクベーシストでヘッドハンターズ(the Headhunters)の結成メンバーであるポール・ジャクソン(Paul Jackson)ら、日本および世界の一流アーティストとも共演するなど、彼女の活動はさらに広がっている。なかでも、indigo jam unitに招かれて彼らの2011年リリース予定のCDで共演したことは、彼女の歌声と音楽が魅力にあふれていることを物語る。 アリシアは2002年3月に三重大学音楽教育修士号、2006年には神戸大学総合人間科学の博士号を取得した。また、彼女は姫路獨協大学で教鞭もとっている。現在は、自身作曲の作品を携えたデビューアルバム「funky-soul original」に取り組んでいる。このアルバムはニューヨークで現地のトップミュージシャン達とレコーディングし、2011年後半リリースが決まっている。これを見逃す手はない。要チェックだ！ ........

ALICIA SALDENHA (pronounced sal-dáy-nya) was born in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. She started singing and dancing from early childhood, then toured the Caribbean and the United States as a teenager in several musical productions. While attending university in the United Kingdom, Alicia quickly fell in love with jazz and changed her musical direction. Alicia has since performed throughout Europe and Japan, with appearances at the Blue Note, Osaka, the Nice Jazz Festival, France, with George Clinton and the P-Funks, as well as at the Umbria Jazz Festival, Italy. She has also performed with legendary jazz steel drummer, Othello Molineaux, during his Japan tours. As a soul singer-songwriter and bandleader, Alicia Saldenha performs with her band throughout Japan. The shows are dynamic, featuring original as well as classic soul, jazz, funk and reggae. She increasingly collaborates with top Japanese and international artists, such as Japan's nu jazz band, indigo jam unit, and legendary funk bassist and founding member of the Headhunters, Paul Jackson. Alicia Saldenha is also a scholar and an educator, having obtained a Doctorate (PhD) in Culture and Civilization Sciences from Kobe University. She is currently working on her solo debut album of funky-soul originals, recorded in New York City with some of the finest musicians, set for release late 2011. Stay tuned! In fact, Alicia is set to release the first single from this album, "Ooh Boy," in September 2011. A house remix, produced by Jenifa Mayanja, has also been made. Look out for the digital release coming soon! Moreoever, Alicia collaborated with indigo jam unit on an album this year.
